I think the question you need to ask yourself, is what is your preferred learning technique?

Some people learn by reading. (seems like not you)
Some people learn by writing.
Some people learn by listening.

My daughter had better luck comprehending stuff when she heard it. I used to help her with her studies, just by sitting in the room with her, so that she could read her books outloud...even hearing it from her own voice helped her understand it a lot better.

If you can figure out what it is that is your learning "trigger", you can adjust your study time to accommodate it. Read out loud, for example. Alternately, if you learn better by writing, take notes as you're reading the book.

Make notes as you study, and then toss them away. Next time you want to revise, write the notes out again! Time consuming, but it really does the trick.
