How old are you ten? They did not gain independence per se, they simplly changed governments, the Tsar wasnt a king he was more of an emporer. The Russian people overthrew the Tsar in march 1917, and then the Bolsheviks(radical socialists or communists) overthrew the provisional government after failing to gain a majority in the Russian Duma? I think, they were led by V.I. Lennin, this led to three years of civil war between the Whites(various anticommunist groups) and the Reds(Bolsheviks), which ended in the establishment of the Soviet Union, they traded one tyranny for another.

He wasn't a king he was a Czar. The labor party killed the Czar and took over, that's how. The Czar and the land owners were never a friend to the serfs so the serfs saw it as liberation and freedom. The serfs never owned land before, so the fact that the state owned it all now didn't make any difference to them. They were given more opportunities than ever before in their history, so it was pretty easy. The royals and the landowners didn't have such a easy go of it. If they chose to stay they were screwed.
