I have an average beard. I recently switched to a manual razor (Gillette Fusion, which i really like). After I shave, my face feels smooth with the grain, but still a little rough against the grain. I shave with the grain. Is this normal? Is it true that to get a completely smooth face i need to shave against the grain?

I know I need to do both. With the grain first, and then against the grain. I get a nice smooth shave that way, and it lasts all day!!

Chow!!

I imagine everyone's skin behaves a little differently, but I find shaving with the direction of growth is adequate most of the time (going to work, etc.). Occasionally however, especially if I skipped a day, I'll shave with the direction of growth, then re-apply a little shaving cream and shave against the direction of growth. This will result in a real close shave. The next day, if you shave at all, only shave with the direction of growth. Do not shave against the direction of growth two days in a row.

You shouldn't shave against the grain. It will result in ingrown hairs and razor burn. Try using shaving oil before shaving. This helps raise the hairs so the razor can shave them easier.

do not do it against the grain otherwise it will become too hard and would give great pain while shaving in the old age...
