No it is not a bloke thing, it is a Man (Human) thing - I will assume you have seen the Movie...

The Monolith's dimensions are 1 by 4 by 9 - The Squares of 1, 2 & 3 (The Hebrew for GOD).

It is about Man's evolution from Primitive to Space Explorer -

The End of the Film is open to much debate, however here is how I understand it...

Dave Bowman, after contact with the Monolith, ascends to another level of consciousness - The Monolith gives him life of luxury, so as to allow his consciousness to come to terms with the fact that he is already dead.

Although Dave Bowman lives to a ripe old age, this sequence takes only moments as he is Outside of Space & Time...

The Monolith looks over him as he ascends...

"MY GOD, ITS FULL OF STARS" - Dave Bowman's last transmission at the beginning of 2010!

GOD = THE UNIVERSE

NOW GO AND WATCH 2010

BTW - most blokes do not understand this film either...

The first time I saw it I’ll admit I was a little confused in places but that changed after I saw 2010 which seemed to explain a lot. Seeing 2001 again afterwards with this newfound knowledge it was like watching a whole new film in some ways. Perhaps it’s just me but I think both of the films need to be seen (01 first or 10 won’t make sense at all) and then when you watch them for a second time around you can appreciate them both a lot better. As for what I think it’s about, I’m not sure I can give you a true answer to your question as my view is very defiantly clouded by both films not just the one so the best I can do is offer you view taking both of them into account. What I got from it was an alien race of “guardians” for want of a better word were looking in on us and had now decided we were evolved enough. We’re making flights into space etc and were on the verge of true space exploration and so they moved in and made a home (the Jupiter becomes a sun thing from 2010) close to us to look after us and offer guidance and assistance. The whole thing is therefore the lead up to the great new beginning or next big leap forward for mankind. That said there’s enough vague aspects where it wouldn’t surprise me if someone else could reach a completely opposite yet just as logical conclusion and I’d be willing to bet it was written so that would actually be the case. So all things considered, taking both films as a whole, I’d give it a 7 out of 10 and say I did enjoy it.

I saw the movie when it came out in 1968. In those days we waited in long lines to buy movie tickets, I am talkn' around the block lines.

Then for awhile there were asigned seats and there were what was called ushers, who helped us find our seats. Anyhow...I was just having a brief flashback.

By the time my bf and I got in to the theater we were sitting in the second row. The movie was way too upclose. My bf that I saw the movie with was and still is a genious & at the time he said he couldn't figure it out.

Much of it is symbolic. The great monolith seems to represent a higher power that we can't comprehend. It is about the mysteries of the universe. The attempt mankind goes to in extreems to understand the universe. Our battle to evolve and our ability to invent things to help us as humans- computers- space travel etc.

I would have to see the movie again to say anymore.

Peace
I

2001 is about the important moments in the evolution of man. Every time the monolith appears it signifies a giant leap for mankind.
1. With the monkeys, as the monolith appears, they pick up bones and start using them as weapons.
2. The second time it appears it signifies the beginning of Dave's move to a higher plane of consciousness and enlightenment.

The final quarter of the film is him experiencing a new way of seeing the world.

HAL is supposed to represent technology developing its own consciousness, manifested in human actions. The only way Dave can get the upper hand on the new technological consciousness is by transcending his current physical and mental state.

I think...but who knows!!

It's the evolution of man.

How we evolved from simple monkeys into the creatures we are today. And how our lust for advancement eventually leads to our decline when our creations realise that they are superior to us.

Terminator is a much simplified and graphic version of the same film.

Nature has a life-cycle for all it's creations, which ends in their demise. We got clever, and we think we can beat nature, but these films suggest we will get too clever and bring about our own downfall.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it!

It's a film of a speaking computer and a crew going into space and getting stuck there after finding the creation of man, 2010 is the rescue mission.
