I'm not trying to boast but I've been told I make really nice gift baskets. I have a bridal shower to go to but I'm short on cash. If I buy a gift basket and gift wrap from the dollar store, and buy some bath and body products from a local warehouse sale (which is good quality) will it be cheaper than buying a ready made basket?

I've always done my own. For baby showers as well. I always get rave reviews. And it's a plus when you put your time and love into it. Good for you if your good at it. Go for it. I just love putting mine together. I fine the reactions are rewarding as well.
Take care and have fun.

OK I'm back; but I have to think before I answer. The problem with DIY, no offense to you or anyone; is that often the intent is great, the effort strong, but the result sometimes not very successful. Certainly as a DIY this might mean you'd actually have a BASKET; and items and ideas for the "making". It might also assume you actually have someone to GIFT? There is likely; local to you; and agency that deals strictly with such rentals. They are probably better equipped, and may even be extensive enough to rent flowers; food items; shelf life marked products to include in the baskets; and probably even do delivery and pick up. It seems a logical enterprise to me LOL, for Weddings/ and Funerals to name two examples. YOU might even become proficient enough to go into the field yourself? OR you could just NOT give gifts. Ok my two cents. Time to get more coffee and get serious. I have a full day ahead collecting rented landscaping; from real estate that has sold. I need a larger truck however, as reclaiming "lawns" takes up way too much space and time.

I love making gift baskets, but to be honest, I always find it is more expensive if you make your own. The reason? You add more, you find cute things that you can't decide, so you get more than one, etc. I don't mind spending the time or the energy, but it seems more economically feasible to purchase one. I have even tried to go when there are sales to buy things like "3 for 10", but I always seem to spend more. Baskets are inexpensive if you buy them at Michael's or a dollar store though! Have fun!

I think it would be cheaper to make your own because you can control the cost of the items that you include, and you can decide how many items to put in the basket. I think it would be more thoughtful than buying one, and possibly better looking. Have fun making it, if you decide to.

The nice thing about making your own is you can control the quality of products in it.
It also tells the recipient that you care enough to put your own time and thought into your gift, which is invaluable

depends on how much time you have free, dont forget to count your labor as an expense. typically, i earn 20 dollars an hour, so if it takes me two to three hours to do it, its cheaper to spend 30 mins and pick up a premade basket for 40. but it also depends on the person, homemade baskets tend to be more genuine and from the heart.

If you are getting your materials discounted, you will end up paying less and getting more. Many people would probably choose to make their own if they had the time. Go for it!
