Well, heck honey. You most certainly can put that square peg in the round hole. Trust me on this one. Just grab you a big old hammer and start to swinging. You'll get it in there eventually, but you might never get it out again either.....so at least you won't have to worry about safety wire or lock nuts.
To a true mechanic, nothing is impossible........some things are just a wee bit more difficult. :)

You can if the round hole is much larger than the square peg, but otherwise, the corners prevent it from going in.

You can if the square peg is smaller then round hole.
You could also sand the edges off the square peg and make it rounder for a better fit.
