It seems to me that "staying the course" isn't working, but I think a sudden withdrawal would have tragic consequences as well. What scares me is that there may not be a workable solution. We may just have to get out of the way and let the iraqis have their civil war. What do you think?

The only solution is to get out. It will unleash a civil war, it will make the US look weak, and we will all look like a bunch of hypocrites. But staying is doing no good, and it won't get any better no matter how many troops die. And for every person we kill there, for every day we make their lives hell on earth, they seethe with hatred for us. Not a cool scene.

The short answer to your question is 'BUG OUT'.

The US has never learned to stay out of the middle of a civil war such as 'Nam, Korea, Afgan, and Iraq. When you get into the middle of these types of civil wars that have been going on for thousands of years then there is no way short of bombing the entire country back into the stone age to "win". Of course in the case of Iraq and Afgan it would only be a couple of weeks back to the stone age.

I agree that bugging out would have tragic consequences but for who? The Iraqis. As it is now, we are suffering tragic consequences every time one of our service people come home in a body bag.

My vote goes to getting out and the sooner the better.

The problem is that our administration failed to look at the history and political climate of Iraq and the entire Middle East. These country's have been occupied by foreign powers for centuries, their people have been forced to accept other religions, their treasures looted and sent to other countries etc. Look at how many of Egypt's national treasures are in France, the US and the UK. What about India's treasures. These country's will oppose an occupation with their last breath even if it is to "liberate "them.
Second, look at their history when they were in power themselves, Whenever a dictator is in power, he stays in power, there is no real election coming in 4 years. In the US we know that if someone from the other party wins the election we have another chance in 4 years. In these countries they stay in power until they die. Egypt for example, has no living ex presidents. They have elections but the president wins 100% of the vote. In a country with poverty, high unemployment, crime and government corruption and graft rampant, do you really think no one voted for the other guy? So they stay in power until they are assassinated or die and they maintain that power many times by terrorizing the opposing party. In Iraq the ruling Sunni party have fought the Shi'a and they are now afraid of retaliation. They will die and rip their country apart for control, they do not think like Americans who have never been occupied.

i think the only solution left is withdrawing completely from iraq and acceptig the fact that the invasion was a grave mistake the next thing is to ask the local leaders to decide for themselves as to what they want to do about there countries future and disslove all the war tribunal hearing against saddam and exile him some other neutral which is willing to accept him so that he creates no more trouble and stop making threats about nuking iran and syria etc

I agree with you were too deep to pull out and yet were not making much progress

TO ME WE HAVE TWO OPTIONS:
either we pull out which would not be good...
or we pick up the pace and do what we've been trying to do but to stop dragging our butts about it and get it done.

We finess the situation to much.. if were at war we should hit hard and quick... it's like peeing on a fire when you really need a bucket of water to put it out.

No solution but years of civil war and chaos.
But getting the US out would help.
Then they can no longer pretend to be fighting the 'infidel'.
