I once heard on a show that a pregnant woman should'nt eat shrimp. Is this true? And if so why should'nt they?

mercury in seafood can be absorbed by the fetus and harm them if consumed in large quantities.

You can eat shrimp, but you can't only eat shrimp. You're supposed to avoid seafood that is high in mercury and zinc because it COULD cause problems with the developement of the brain. I personally have three daughters and I'm expecting a baby, I eat shrimp at least once a week. Boiled shrimp in my FAVORITE food and my doctor said it's fine to eat. If we listened to every doctor nothing would be safe for pregnant women to eat! lol

What is really said is that woman should stay awhile from seafood while pregnant. Actually a woman should not eat too much seafood anyways. Seafood such as fish, etc. contain mercury, the bigger the fish the more mercury it contains. The mercury accumulates in your bloodstream and get passed along to the baby which can cause damage to the heart, liver, brain, etc. Also, with woman there is concern that it can make us infertile. ................Just remember when a person dies and has mercury in the system......all is left is your bones and a pool of mercury. Mercury doesn't decompose like the rest of your body.

Seafood has mercury in it which is not good for pregnant women. However, shrimp, catfish, and salmon for example are lower in mercury and small amounts will be fine. The main seafood that you do not want to eat is swordfish, shark....things like that. You could find a website that tells you what fish is high in mercury if it would make you feel better... I am 8 weeks pregnant and still eat seafood. My family is from south louisiana so that is our main love!

Pregnant and nursing women shouldn't eat fish or seafood due to the possibility of mercury contamination. Omega 3 essential fatty acids are important for a pregnant or nursing mom, so you can add flax seed oil, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, or omega 3 supplements to your diet. If you take fish oil supplements, make sure the supplement is certified to be free of mercury.

You can eat it, but there are specific kinds and amounts. There are a lot of sea foods pregnant women shouldn't eat, or in moderation. It's because of the mercury in the sea food, and it can cause slight to serious birth defects. Grab the book "what to eat when you're expecting", it's great!

Read this month's Parents magazine! It addresses this issue. I happen to be a seafood eater and pregnant. Doc says it isn't toxic in moderation. Fish like Mackeral and Snapper should be avoided.

Nearly all fish and shellfish contain trace amounts of Mercury - while in most cases not a LOT, there's always the chance it could be higher than normal.

Baby+Mercury= Ick.

avoid tuna fish, king mackerel, tilefish, swordfish due to mercury content.

shrimp, crab, lobster, and scallops are much lower in mercury and are considered safe. so is tilapia, haddock, and cod. All of these choices, including shrimp, are very very low in fat. Shrimp in particular is almost fat-free (unless you deep-fry it or serve it in butter). So i have no idea why shrimp would be bad.
