Unless you crack the hard drive on an iPod, you will have to use iTunes to update (and of course you'll invalidate your warranty).
Stick with Creative or find something else is my advice :|

You can download songs from windows media player on to your ipod, but they will all eventually end up on itunes anyway, but if you can't use windows media player do download songs onto your ipod, then burn a CD off of windows media player, and import that CD onto itunes, and you'll have the same songs that you had, only on itunes, but no, you don not have to use itunes.

I have itunes and i download music from itunes all the time on to my ipod. You can not use Windows Media Player. You can only listen to music on it. Heres what you have to do: plug in your ipod into the computer. then you go to itunes. check off all the songs you want to download on to your ipod. then you just press a yellow or orange button on top and it will start downloading. this is totally FREE.

You have to use iTunes to get the song TO your ipod, but it's a free app anyway -
You don't, however, have to purchase music if you don't want to. You can use your iPod with any mp3, if you're just creative and know how to Google things. ;o)

You have to use itunes but you don't have to buy anything, you can upload all your files to iTunes that are already on the computer.

You can upload only from your itunes library. You would have to move the files from windows to itunes.
