Is it because the government cares for its citizens? if so, why would gambling in the physical world be legal then?

My thought into all of this is that powerful people who control the big casinos realized that they could be losing $ this way and people will stop coming to their hotels/casinos. So they invested money to convince the government to pass a law to make it illegal to gamble online. If you think my theory is right, what do you think of it ? do you think as americans we can allow for such actions to be imposed on us? I'm not a gambler myself, but to see that some rich people can create laws and make a perfectly unharmful activity illegal for their own good bothers me as it tells me that people lost their freedom here. If hitler had billions of dollars, would the nazis populate the streets?

Yes, the casino lobby surely must have pressured lawmakers to shut down internet gambling.

Since the lottery, horse racing, church bingo halls, and Indian casinos are all legal, there's nothing sacred about gambling as such, just certain types of gambling. That means that the government beaurocrats are too dumb to tax internet gambling, where Americans spent $6B last year.

It will be very interesting to see if any of the mainstream casino companies (like Harrah's) start to buy online gambling websites at bargain prices, and then change the law to allow 'regulated' gambling.

You're right! I'm not a gambler either, but we can buy lottery tickets all day, travel to casino's, etc. They just don't like it because they don't have their fingers in it. I understand credit card companies are having a difficult time collecting payment from habitual gamblers though. Again business. Freedom is just another word for nothin left to loose!

Isn't that weird? It's only legal if the Government is running it.
I am against gambling of any kind because so many poor people gamble what little they have trying to hit it big and have a better life.

There is no way to regulate online gambling.
How would you like to lose all your money to a fixed poker game against 4 imaginary opponents who only exist on Carlos' computer in Honduras?
Carlos needs you account info.
Sure He does.
Let's say you win.
Carlos doesn't cut you a check.
Carlos doesn't send you HIS account info, either.
Now what do you do?
Step through the computer screen and wring his neck?
Tell the local cops to do something about it?
You don't expect the Honduran cops to help, do you?
Think about it.

Because the government thinks it knows better than the individual how to handle money. They feel that they have to protect us from ourselves. Plus they want to be able to tax your winnings and currently they can't.
