Woodpeckers drill holes looking for insects. It could be that you have a much more serious problem and should have a pest control inspection.

Ran across this earlier today -- how about dropping an "attack" spider on it!?

"The BIRDS-AWAY Attack Spider® is a battery-operated device that will chase away damage-causing woodpeckers. Activated by sound, the spider drops down on an 18 inch string while making a loud noise. Then it climbs back up the string, ready to attack again. This unusual solution is both very inexpensive and highly effective. Woodpeckers cannot stand them!"

Sounds like it might work -- plus it could be a lot of fun, especially at Halloween!

We just put out suet feeders away from the house. Seems that if the woodpeckers can find free food easily, they leave the house alone -- lol!!

My parents have a vacation house which is getting drilled as woodpeckers (actually flickers) have been creating nests for several years.

The birds are not looking for food, just a safe place from squirrels in order to raise a family. My dad built a couple of large nesting boxes (about 6"x6" square, and 18" tall, with a hinged top that overhangs to keep out rain. A 2" diameter hole was drilled for the entrance. The box was filled with old pine needles and the box hung on the wall near the previous nesting holes. A couple of birds actually used them.

Where there were original bird nest holes, we filled the holes with wooden plugs (plywood circles made using a 2" diameter hole saw) and caulked the plugs to hold them in place. In a few other locations, we used sheet metal covers over the holes.

Since the birds are a protected species, killing them with a gun or poison is out of the question. Your options are limited to installing some kind of netting over your siding, or replacing the siding with stucco, or vinyl or metal siding.

I don't know if using noisemakers or hanging strips of reflective mylar tape will work, but you might give it a try. (Do you have any old AOL startup disks laying around?)

Good luck.

HAHAHA After reading the above answers i think i have heard everything HAHAHA
Wood peckers are drilling holes in your siding because it is wood and that is what wood peckers do, They drill holes in wood in order to nest. If you want to get rid of the wood peckers you need to call you local DNR office (Department of Natural Resources) and ask where you can purchase fake Owls to install on top of your house, two or three owls should do the job, Most small birds will not nest any where near an Owl because they are enemy's the owl views smaller birds as a food source. You may also be able to find these owls at your local farm supply store or hardware store.

Woodpeckers will only "drill" holes when they know there are termites in wood...if you have a woodpecker making holes in your siding, I'm thinking you probably have termites in your walls. Call an exterminator ASAP! (sorry)

Actually woodpeckers make holes for fun even when there are no insects. Get out the shotgun.

Most of these answers do not know what they are talking about.
Woodpeckers WILL fill a house with small holes and put an acorn in each hole. They will do this thousands of times on a single house once they have selected it as their 'Grainery Tree.' It is very difficult to make them stop once they have some time and acorns 'invested' in your house.
The Attack Spiders listed above were the only thing that saved our house, but one is not enough, it takes a bunch of 'em. Owls didn't work, reflective streamers didn't work, Attack Spiders did work.
