I don't think they are equal as they are opposites. But, you are right about the need for evil to exist. You can not know what is good without knowing what is bad...

I do not think they are equal. But they are a yin and yang of a kind. In our world of good and evil, evil is always at war for power over the other. In the end evil is dependant upon good for indivduality. But Good is born of itself, non dependant upon darkness. In the end of things and the beginning of others evil will be gone and the space time continueum will not fall apart...lol. Good thrives on itself. Evil thrives on conquering good. See what I mean? :)

If I want to answer your questions, i should assume the existence of good and evil, which i dont beleive: I beleive there is only power.. the good are weak and the bad are powerful.
Anyways, just for the sake of your question, I think that in this world "bad" is stronger than "good"
If you want to consider all the things happening in the world.. most of them are "bad"
but anyways, neither bad or good are vital for the existance of the other.. either can exist alone but the world would not be balanced then.

There is no evil. There's only bad, and bad really means something like harmful, painful, disadvantageous or inappropriate.

Furthermore, both good and bad are meaningless without context. Good for what? Bad for whom? The nearest to evil to which bad comes is "bad for a great many people."

When lots of people agree with each other that such-and-such is bad, the badness sort of gets refied to a bogus status (evil) wherein it's held to be independent of context.

There has to be evil to understand good. What would you relate good to if you did not have evil? How would you mark the difference? To be able to accept one, you need to accept the other.

Equal? Probably, but good and evil are purely objective. One person's good is another person's evil.

In a larger sense, you need evil to show what good is like.

But can animals be evil? When a killer whale eats a seal, is it evil or doing what Nature intends?

Light cannot exist without darkness, day without night, good without evil.

Good and evil? I believe this, to be entirely a product of the big human mind.

There is no good, there is no evil, these are human constructs. We are all growing, evolving, enlightening our minds. Look past words, concepts, see people for what and who they truly are, beyond reality, space and time. Life is, however, balance, harmony. Embrace life, and find your center.
