There is a simpler way (i don't know if there is some software for it)
Go to
http://msn.blocked.nl/
enter the person's email ID
It will show if the person is online or not.
If the person is online and he is not visible in your list, then yes he has blocked you.
But if the person isn't online and obviously isn't visible in your list, then you'll have to wait till he is online (i.e. shows on the website).

Not necessarily. Your friend might have the first version of Msn, which doesn't allow you to have display pictures. Also, it could be that your friends hasn't been online for a while so it doesn't show a picture.
