A LAN is a local network. The Internet is a global network. They are connected through a router that sends the information out of the LAN and onto the Internet. The reply is routed back the same way.
In most cases, a Telecom company supplies the access point onto the Internet to a company or individual; though homes can also get this connection point from a cable or satellite company.

A LAN is a Local Area Network, or a business or home network. A LAN does not need to connect to the outside to be a network. So, I assume you want to know how a private network sends out information packets to the Interent, also known as the WWW.
Ok, a LAN is one of three connection types: 1. A Wired connection in which Internet Connection Sharing is used or connected via a hub with or without a switch. The hub is connected to the ISP sourse hardware, with each computer conencted to the hub with a Cat 5 cable. 2. A Wireless connection in which each computer has an adapter in which signals are passed to a Router which is connected to the ISP cable or DSL connection. or 3. a Mixed network in which both wired and wireless connections used with a router, adapters and cables.
Now, in each scenario the computer is connected either with a wired cable, a wireless signal or both, and as such are behind a hub or router attached to a ISP hardware Internet connection deivice. I am going to make this short and only use the Mixed scenerio otherwise this will take way to long to answer.
Each computer sends a signal to the hub or router to the ISP hardware device which then sends it on out to the WWW. It is received by a server which locates the webpage you are looking to connect with, downloads that page to your computer via the ISP device, to the router or hub and then to the computer which requested it.
All this is done via IP Adresses. IP=Internet Protocol. Each computer or device which directly connects to the "Internet" has this uniqu address which identifies it to the rest of the Internet. The address in "Public". Now on a LAN, all the computers have "Private or Static" address. The Public address in the only one "seen" by the Internet. The Public IP Adress device sends all information to the computer which requested it, so the Public Internet only "sees" the one Public IP Adress. How does the Public IP Address device (hub or router) know which computer to send the information to? Because each computer has its own private address and that address is know to the device with the Public IP Adress. Which is why it is called a Router or a hub, the Router, "routes" outgoing and incoming signals. The hub does the same thing.
So, Private IP Adress device sends to its LANs Public IP Address device, Public IP Adress device then sends it on out to a server, which gathers the requested information and then sends it on back to the Public IP Address Device which then sends it internally to its Private IP Address device member of LAN.
I hope this over simplified expanation helps you understand this a bit better. It is confusing and I too really wanted to know at one time how all this works. So I bought a book and then another and then found information on the web, and so on and such.
