Most of the commercial gold/jewelry cleaners are some sort of relatively weak acid formulation--maybe sulfamic?
This notwithstanding, I use shaving cream and an old toothbrush on my class ring. Works great.

Plain white vinegar is an excellent cleaner for gold jewelry, particularly if it has gemstones (not pearl or opal though). Warm some vinegar in a small, sealable container in the microwave. Drop in your gold jewelry and put a lid on it. Let it sit overnight, and in the morning, use a baby's toothbrush (small, soft) to brush away any grime that might still be left. Rinse under warm water and polish with a dry, lint free cloth.

Go to the jewelry counter at any place and ask them. They should have some behind the counter, and if they're really nice, they'll let you use it. If it's real gold, soda might work, depending on the dirtiness of the jewelry, but what has always worked for me is a toothbrush and some baking powder mixed with water.

Try some salt in water and soaking the earrings - if that does not work try a bit of baking soda (bicarbonated soda) in water and soaking them or rubbing/soaking the earrings with lemon juice.

I got mine at Walmart. But my nail lady told me that either lemon juice or denture cleaner work on jewelry and on nails. Hope that helps.

take a little ammonia and heat it up in the microwave in a small glass dish, add dish soap liquid like dawn or joy and soak for a few minutes. Another alternative is windex.
