You have to become a medical doctor first and then specialize after that. Many years of med school if you want to do this. Talk to a school counsellor and they will put you on the right track.

As Lily pointed out, to become a pyschiatrist, you must attend medical school and then specialize in pyschiatry. In current mental health practice, psychiatrists mainly prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications. Most psychiatrists do little counseling.

There are many other positions in the field of mental health:

- psychologists of various types (clinical, counseling, child, school etc.) (Ph.D.)
- clinical social workers (Bachelors in Social Work, and usually a Masters in Social Work to advance in the field)
- licensed professional counselors (Masters degree in Counseling)
- pastoral counselors (Masters degree in Pastoral Counseling)

With an associate's or bachelor's degree in related fields (human services, pyschology, etc.) you can get a job as social or human services assistant or case manager.

In all of the above degrees, you take classes in human behavior, general clinical/counseling skills, and those specific to your specialization or the type of people/groups/issues you'd like to work with, such children, substance abuse, the elderly, etc.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook, has good overviews of the various occupations, education & licensing requirments, salaries, etc.
This is the page for pyschologists. At the bottom, you will find links to related occupations.

I'm currently earning a Masters in Social Work and would be happy to answer any more questions about that.
