When you need a boat to cross the body of water
you are dealing with a lake

Might add here for the benefit of a couple of the answerers
there are Thousands of man-made lakes in the world
and a lake doesn't have to have tributaries of Any nature to be a lake !!!

Lakes usually have a river flowing into them and out of them.. Ponds do not

If you can put a boat on it (not a toy boat), and move around on it, it is a lake.
