Check out a researcher named Lashley. This is one of the most dramatic stories, and is full of the reflections on the romance of science.
Lashley was looking for the physical seat of memory, which he called the engram. He trained rats to run through mazes and then excised parts of their brains. Then it gets dramatic. Lashly became frustrated and steped up his experiments. Thousands of rats were sacrificed in this way. Lashly is considered one of the principle researchers in psychology, his work makes for dramatic reading.
