Try putting cedar chips in their cage. Fleas don't groove on the cedar and you don't need any chemicals.

It's probably a parasite out of the bedding if you use wood chips. I hope you are using aspen if it is wood. Ceder is highly toxic to rodents..A pet store will have a spray called "8 in 1 small animal spray" safely kills everything but mites. I have to use it on my piggies about 3 or 4 times a year, and they're are all over 6 years old.

Gerbils don't get fleas. They do get mites & lice. it's a common problem -- the tiny bugs come from other rodents, from bedding, or from used cages.

The bad news is that it's hard to solve. You can't just put a flea collar on a gerbil. You need to see your vet, verify the scratching is from parasites and not allergies, and he'll prescribe you the right dose of medicine. Usually vets give a carefully measured dose of liquid ivermectin.
