Someone burned one of those big pizza's in the oven at my condo... It burned in there for over 3 hours at 425degree's and filled the entire house with smoke from floor to ceiling. Now it looks like the walls and ceilings are stained in every room and I cannot get rid of the awful smell- it's making me ill. I've already aired out the whole entire house for hours, but I can't leave the windows open forever because it's freezing outside... Is this something we can fix ourselves or do we need a professional?

I should add that this happened yesterday... the smoke smell must be stuck to everything because there was more than enough time to air the smoke itself out of the house.

You have a real problem. I am sure that the smoke has penetrated everywhere. Your upholstered furniture needs to be cleaned, carpets shampooed, and all cloth washed. Painted surfaces need to be washed and possibly repainted. Smoke damage is very difficult to deal with and there are contractors who specialize in this area.

I hope you have homeowners' insurance. It is time to file a claim and turn this job over to the professionals.

Good luck with your problem.

I would call my insurance agent (hopefully you do have insurance) and find out if this type of damage is covered. I had a boiler fail to ignite sending black soot into an 8 room house (including closets, bathrooms, attic, etc.). I called my agent and requested he come to examine the damage himself. He did and authorized: 1. A cleaning company to come in (or pay me for the work); 2. dry cleaning and 3. laundry expenses (everything needed laundering). It is worth a try. Otherwise, you'll end up cleaning everything and if that's the case, I would use a PineSol solution for walls, woodwork and floors and 1/2 cup white vinegar with hot water for carpets. The vinegar neutralizes odors. I might also check with the condo association for assistance.

First wash all fabrics (pillow and blankets). Spray your couches and chairs with febreeze (or some type of freshner).

To get rid of the smell for good wash your walls with TSP (found at any hardware store or a Walmart type store).

You may want to shampoo your carpets too.

Better yet, get the person who burned the pizza to do all of the above.

Then your house should be as good as new.
