Tell him that he is a very special friend and that you value his friendship. You're worried that if you became boy/girl friends that you might lose that special relationship!

Tell him the truth, even if it hurts. It'll hurt a lot less them having him puppy-dog you for a while, wasting time hoping for you, only to eventually make a fool of himself when the truth comes out. Be nice about it, but hell, you can't help it if you don't find him attractive. If he can't handle the truth, then he's not really your friend anyway and is just pretending to be, in hopes of getting you.

If you lie, you will be left with two choices;
#1 tell yet another lie to cover up the first
#2 own up to the lie that you already told
If you tell the truth right off the bat, you will never need to do either of the above.

As a guy, I gennerally agree, that if a bloke is good friends with a pretty girl for a long time, he's either really interested in something more ALL the time, or interested in NOTHING more. This guy has fancied you for blooming ages, however, anyone foolish enough to say that they love someone straight off deserves nothing in my opinion.
Tell him the truth.

Just tell him that you want to be friends with him. Plain and simple. Tell him you enjoy and value the time you two share together, but you can only see him as a friend. He will be hurt regardless- but be honest. Your friendship will change after this and it’s best you don’t spend too much time with him, because you may give him hope and you will hurt him even more.

Well I think that you should tell him the truth like that you dion't like him because then you will live a lie and if he loves you that much he will understand as much as you do, don't let love get between friendship it screws everything up trust me i've been there before. Just tell him the truth and then you will know wether he is right for you or not.

Souldn't have said there was someone else that hurt,
then by waiting he will have anexity,
then by saying no you will have hurt him again,
Then he likely will not be able to be around you anymore,
He likely loved you for a long time has he dated since you have been friends?

I'd rather hear the truth than hear that you like someone else over me. You should tell him how you'll feel, if he's a true friend, he'll understand.

saying the truth is always the best way to go. You can not change your feeling.
you like him , he is nice and you want to be friend with him, things might change later but you do not know.
does it sound bad? I do not think it will hurt anyone.
