I love Dorothy Dunnett. She has three books/series to consider:

-King Hereafter about an 11th century earl in Scotland who Dunnett believed was the model for Macbeth.

-The Lymond series, 7 or 8 books set during the turbulent period while Queen Mary reigned before Queen Elizabeth (the first) took over, with the final book ending just as Elizabeth moves into power. It was this series that had me looking for more Dunnetts, and left me sad when I'd heard she had died.

-The House of Niccolo series, which I had a hard time reading and never finished.

Anything by Naguib Mahfouz. The Cairo Trilogy is especially good. Akenathen - dweller in truth is a favourite. It is about the conflict between old and new religious beliefs and is told in a very interesting and readable manner. I feel kind of funny rating books by such an amazing yet humble author, I am not worthy of judging him.

I wouldn't suggest these if they weren't 10 out of 10s.
Matthew Pearl's "The Dante Club" and "The Poe Shadow"
Tracy Chevalier's "Girl With a Pearl Earring"
Tobsha Learner's "The Witch of Cologne"
Kathryn Lasky's "Beyond the Burning Time" and "Blood Secret"
Elizabeth George Speare's "The Witch of Blackbird Pond"

Marcus Corvinus series, by David Wishart-Set in Ancient Rome in the reign of Tiberius. Great fun-9/10.

Falco series, by Lindsey Davis-Set in Ancient Rome in the reign of Vespasian. Also great fun, but fewer historically accurate facts (I believe)-7/10.
