Click on the "beetle" on the left hand side of the page. A fairly comprehensive list of beetles is presented with descriptions and photos. I'm betting it won't take you long to find the information you want.

Three inches?? Where was he and what was he doing (or she)? Stag beetles can get big, they are mainly ground living beetles eating plant debris. They have the big "pinchers" in front.

Some click beetles are big, they get their name by the sound they make when they flip themselves upright after being turned over.

Seems to be there's something called Bessbug but I've never seen one, but understand they can get big.

Long horn beetle would fit this group if you are also measuring the antennae. They are big time tree pests.

You sure it is a beetle and not a wasp?

More info would help. Also, catch one and take it to your county agent....Michigan Cooperative Extension Service....or Master Gardener...for a positive ID.
