The school that I work for has just been named Carbooncollege (Carbon College), because of the mining history of the region. The new logo for the school is a spiral consisting of little circles . The outer circles are "hollow" and the inner are more "filled in with black. The last little circle is completly black like a little black coal. I hope this will help you further!

Logo designs are best if they're simple and with one central image. The current trend is to keep them more representational than literal.
