I think I would agree with you on Nolan Ryan, although Sandy Koufax would be a very close second. Both held hitters to a very low batting average. Koufax was a finer pitcher, but Ryan edges him with the length of service. Koufax retired at about 30.
For a hitter it would be Tony Gwynn, hands down! Other hitters put up great power numbers, but if it were the ninth inning, we were down by a run, there was a runner on second with two outs, I know that Tony would get the big hit.
Players before 1947, like Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, Matthewson, etc., didn't play against the best players of their time, only the best white guys, so their numbers are suspect.

albert pujols and johan santana....johan santana throws some nasty stuff, thought to be one of the best ever, and pujols is the most consistent batter evvvvvver....where was babe after the first 5 seasons of his career, well he would need binoculars to even look at pujols, who is on his way to being the greatest ever...and he also doesnt strike out like pure power hitters....and his name is PUJOLS...and my reasoning for not picking anyone from the past is that im a firm believer that athletes get better every year...i dont think babe ruth could handle a 98mph fastball, much like the runners of that day couldnt run a 9 sec 100m dash
