Against long term, clinical depression, no.
If you're depressed about not having sex, then yes.
Otherwise, even good sex won't get to the heart of what's causing your depression, but it might be a very pleasant distraction for a while.

having lived through a touch bout with depression, i can honestly say that prior to the onset of my depression, our sex life was active. once the sepression struck, i lost complete interest in sex. my mind was more concerned with alleviating the horrific pain and torture the depression was causing. for six-nine months, sex was out of the question. a person cannot bring on depression. it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. one of your responders inferred that you cause your own depression. this is absolutely untrue and unjust.
i would like to recommend to all responders that you need to know an illness, first hand (physical or emotional), before you become an authority re: the issue.

Yes! Get lots of it but make sure it's with the right person. If not that comes with it's own headaches.
Do it just for the fun of it if you are sleeping around. Don't get attached. Sort of like that girl from Sex in the City.

No I do not think so because apparently there is a problem that you are not facing and the sex is just a cover up for the actuall problem.

It does reveal what is causing the depression. You get your mind off the depressing thoughts. Is pretty dramatically evident.

Yes. It releases endorphines that improve mood, but it is only short term. If you have real depression issues, therapy is the only way to address it.

No. That is the problem with people today - they want to mask their feelings rather than deal with them. Yes, sex will make you feel better but only temporarily.
