Start with a male and female that are not related and about 6-8 weeks of age, in separate cages. At 6-8 weeks, they are not physically healthy enough to have babies, even though people let them reproduce then. Female hamsters can be notoriously mean to the male after heat is over and have been known to kill them. You won't know this until the two have been put together. If there's a lot of biting after placing the male with the female, it's best to remove male as soon as mating is accomplished. Female generally doesn't want male around when she's pregnant or afterward. The chances of her eating the young are just as great as the male, whether the two are together or not.
IHave been breeding hamsters professionally for 13 years and Iselect gentle females that will tolerate a male and gentle males that tolerate a female and warm the babies while the mother is off eating. This is accomplished about once in fifty hamsters. Leads to very gentle offspring that generally do not bite and doesn't seem to matter what color pattern is chosen except for white. White long-haired seem to be the nastiest overall. Provide female with lots of fruits and vegetables, hard materials to chew on, like pine. Never use cedar shavings. Do not use Hartz brand food or Wal-Mart brand because the nutritional content is not as good for a breeding hamster. Do not breed the hamster every 3 weeks. Give a 6 week break in between and the mother will produce healthier young. Hamsters produce up until a year old and live to be 2-3 years old. Gentle males and females can live together well after breeding age also.

You need to read up on breeding BEFORE you buy hamsters, much less breed them. There are too many poorly bred hamsters out there. I see people dumping babies all the time back at pet shops because they "accidentally" bred or they "wanted to see babies" but had no clue what they'd do with a whole litter of rodents.

Some species of hamster must be kept seperate except for a few hours during the female's heat cycle. They'll kill each other otherwise.

Here is what I suggest:
- pick up some good books on hamster care for your species of hamster
- join your areas hamster club.
- go to hamster shows & meet hamster breeders
- when you are finally ready to breed and know what species/type you'd like to breed for, get your breeding stock from a good breeder. They'll be more healthy & socialized.

Good luck to you!

My daughter had a male and female hamster, and let me warn you! The female hamster is in heat once a month. If she gets pregnant, which she usually does, she is only pregnant for 14 days and has 10-12 babies at a time. As far as taking care of them, the mom really does all the work, you just have to make sure she has plenty of food and water, since she will be nutritionally deplinshed. If you wish to sell the babies, they have to stay with mom for 3 weeks.
