is "You need to reformat your hard drive!"? I see tons of these answers by people who probably have never done one themselves! This is about the most bogus answer these boobs can give! To begin with, you might end up searching for mobo and other hardware drivers for a month (not to mention the loss of software they will never see again) if you dont know what you are doing! This is to the morons that keep giving this advice! You create more problems from unknowing people than what they had in the first place! You need to consider the fact that if these folks dont know what a reformat entails and some of its pitfalls! Yuoi all might try asking them what the original problem was! I have been building and repairing systems for 20 years and you very seldom find a reformat that will do the job without hunting drivers down!

I agree wholeheartedly, I have had to do that a few times, but unless you have all the original computer software and online access (on a diff computer) you can have create more problems that you solve...

THANK YOU DR. HOUSE!! I see the same thing in these forums... I think that most that suggest a reformat just think that it sounds "cool" or something. I've been teaching in a computer lab for MANY years on every OS from DOS 5 to XP Pro, and have had to reformat a hard drive only 4 or 5 times, and then only after I exhausted EVERY option (and every "Trick"...), and then making sure I had all drivers and software ready. I feel sorry for anyone that thinks that the best or easiest way to solve a PC problem is to reformat.

I just did a search for open questions regarding "reformat" and most of them are from people that can't find, can't load, can't whatever... because they wiped it all out. I actually saw one where a lady wanted to know how to find a document she had deleted by mistake. There were TWO answers before mine (check Recycle BIn... she found it), that said she would have to reformat her hard drive!!!

Yeah Doc, we've both seen it, but I, like you , will keep trying to help WITHOUT saying the "r" word unless totally necessary... we'll leave that to the morons.

I agree, you shouldn't tell just anyone to reformat their hard drive if they don't know what all it involves, but on the other hand, I can usually download all the drivers and its the surest and sometimes the fastest way to do it, especially if you have a virus or something that just won't give up. You do need to have the software CDs though to get it back, which is why I hang on to them, as well as the Install codes.

The only reason to format a hard drive is to clean virus (I mean TONS of them) that destroyed your computer.

I totally agree with you.
