Because that's how things have been done for a long time.... I personally don't give a rat's *** one way or the other - but I can tell you that I'm definately not changing my last name when I get married... so I wouldn't expect my wife to change her's either (unless she wanted to sound Polish, which IMHO is a pretty cool thing)......

What kind of sexist retard would give this question a thumbs down? Are you f**king kidding me???

Its probably the same reason why some women expect the man to always pay when they go out to dinner, or why women believe that man should hold a door open for a lady, and why women think it is improper for a man to hit a lady. All these things that I have mentioned have to do with traditions that started years earlier, and though modernity and the equality that women have enjoyed over the past few years renders many traditions obsolete, these traditions still out live the reason why they were created in the first place.

I surmise women still taking men’s last names have something to do with their nostalgia for bygone era. Furthermore, women generally hold most of the advantages in the household, in terms of the fact that they have a closer kinship to their children because they carry them in their womb. By allowing the man to bequeath his name to his wife and kids, it gives him a sense of belonging that he naturally doesn’t have in the same way a woman does.

Mostly it is tradition, but there is no law that says you have to. You can keep your last name or give it to your husband. Personally I think it is good the way it is. It has been this way for a long time and it just feels right.

There are still plenty of women who believe in tradition. It's much easier to tell that two people are married if they have the same last name. Much easier for sending out cards and letters too :)

Because they feel like it. No one is forcing them to. I guess the thinking is: If taking his name gives you problems, then so will living with him for the rest of your life.

Because then they don't end up with kids with two last names. Trust me, I have both my mother and father's last names and it sucks. I get asked all the time "oh you were married?" (since I was 16) and I'm like "no dumbass, my parents were insane." Fortunately I'm getting married soon and will take my husband's name and lose that hippy hyphen!

That would be between a husband and wife. It has nothing to do with politics, and certainly NOTHING to do with your idea of Womens Liberation. Perhaps someday when you find a man willing to marry you (good luck), you will understand.

Tradition.
Pressure from husband or families.
Don't like their maiden name.
Want to get rid of their ex-husband's name.

I know a couple that got married recently and the husband took the wife's name because he likes her family better than his. Cool huh???
