Generally winter means.. the cold time of the year.. It weather is different all over Australia.
It snows in some places. In other places it is still really hot during the day but freezing at night.

If when you say "winter" you are referring from the period of the winter solstice in late december all the way through the vernal equinox in late march, then Australia will be in its warmer time of the year. This is because the earth is titled at certain degree, which causes the seasons. refer to the link below for a more scientific explanation. ;) hope this helps

When it is winter in the states, it is summer there. My wife's friend lives in Queensland and during Christmas break they go to the beach.
