What's the best way to ask a company how many employees it has at a specific location?

Or, depending on the industry, is this type of information too sensitive to be freely given out?

You should just come right out and ask it. If they don't want to tell you, you can always contact the chamber of commerce for the city that the company is located in. A lot of times, they have that type of information and can provide it to you.
