To eliminate all life on earth including life at the hot spots under the ocean:
I'd say if the sun went red giant or nova. Or if a gamma ray burst happened close enough to fry us.

Global Warming, if it gets too bad.
Nuclear war.
Sun going nova (NOT super nova), although I think humans will be extinct long before that.
