Its wonderful how they build less fortunately families these large, extravagant homes. But if the family is struggling to make it in their shack, how the hell are they supposed to pay the electricity bill in their brand new million square foot home??? Does the show pay utilities?

Families are generally responsible for their own utilities, property taxes, homeowner's insurance, etc.

There is a story at: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4805331

There is also a story about orphaned children that were kicked out by their foster family, shortly after the house was completed, here:

Sometimes the builder or the community will offer to pay off the mortgage or pay off the utilities for a year or two. Sometimes the family is given a car or money for the childrens' college education. A lot of the families end up selling the prizes/extra gifts they are given in order to pay for the insurance, taxes, etc. on the house.

From what I've read, ABC declares the properties as "gifts" so that the families don't have to pay additional taxes on a prize windfall (if you receive over a certain amount of money or a prize worth a certain amount, you will be taxed for it).

That's a really good question! The times I've watched it, it seems like they give the fam a check or something to help w/ hospital bills and other expenses, so I'd hope they'd consider the taxes, utility bills, etc, as they build these enormous homes for these folks!

You know I wondered that myself. They give these huge homes to a family who is struggling to make ends meet because the husband was killed or something happened and he can't work. I can't help but wonder do they pay their mortgage for them, do they pay their utility bills. I wonder that myself.

I saw one where they gave the family a check for a hundred grand to pay off the other mortgage.

The show is well-done, they are charitable, and the workers are great. Ty's soul patch is a bit distracting but he makes up for it with the bullhorn.

not to mention the property taxes, car insurance for the brand new mustang or ford truck they give them etc; sometimes they may be doing more harm then good, although living in one those houses may boost self esteem and morale enough to pull them out of the hole (wish they'd come to my house, lol)

i think everyone is correct that i think they do give some form of check or they have some for of tax cut as well. I don't think they are harming the people by helping them. and some folks just need their self esteems boosted... I need mine boosted that is for sure!
