they feel that if they stop they will not get what they want

I think because being the best you can be starts to turn into an obsession rather than just striving. They start to get so obsessed with being the best and being on top and #1 that the whole point of them getting there is lost. They no longer seem to enjoy themselves and let it get the best of them. Next thign they know they are getting pushed in so many directions and asked to perform so many tasks and responsibilitiues that they become overwhelmed and then crash. Then the are left stuck and miserable and wish they haddent stepped on so many people and shuned out their life just to be the best.

It's never enough to them thay still have to be better do better and strive for more goals because they focused on that so much they miss out on being with family and friends and really in the end they have nothing to show for

Because (assuming that the achiever is smart) once something is achieved (learned) then the active mind gets restless and wants to learn something different. If everyone was content then little would ever be accomplished. Then mankind would not have moved forward.

most people think being the best you can be its in materialistic holdings,how much they make ,how many things they own,how many friends like their things. like striving after the wind... when the day is done what really matters to you?

Because they have never reached the best they can be in their opinion. It's a never ending road. For as good as they do, they have to do better, and so on, and so on, and so on.
