I think the popular view that John was more literary, or creative, or whatever, tends to be the product of a kind of spoon fed pretension in too many cases. At the end of the day, John himself professed jealousy of Paul's songwriting talents (and I'm sure vice versa must have been true on occasion). I mean, Helter Skelter, Yesterday, Blackbird, a good 80% of Sgt Peppers - all Paul. There again, Dear Prudence, Strawberry Fields, I Am The Walrus, the best part of A Day In The Life - all John.

Even when you consider solo material the answer isn't by any means clear. Despite Paul's Wings material being much-maligned by those who ignorantly dismiss him as a writer of pulp love songs, Venus And Mars stands well against any album - including all but the best Beatles ones. That said, Imagine, Mind Games, Watching The Wheels ... stunning stuff.

So Paul or John. Well, both. And no matter what the gainsayers say the Beatles required both of them. And George. And hell, even Ringo. The debate is pointless, and to put one over the other pretty much is saying to the world "I need to actually listen to the records".

Well..... I always was more of a McCartney fan myself...but, I also think nowadays its more understandable to be a Paul fan because Paul is still around and so he remains relevant. Whereas John has been gone now for 27 years! Wow that is a long time! Well, Paul is kind a cool but when you look at him honestly you realize its his legacy as a Beatle that makes him cool. ...... I also see- as I get older- that the guy has some personality traits that if I was to hang with him I probably would think he is an ***. Real arrogant and narcissistic. Totally self absorbed and self centered. The short of it is...I think his public image is real different from his real life persona. As far as talent goes.... I think Paul lost his ability to navigate his talent and even tap into his talent without John around to keep him on the right course. Paul needs John to this very day but he would never admit that in public either. I have a theory about the Beatle in general. They kind of were like the brightest comet that ever passed the earth but because of thier intensity they burned out the light quicker as well and if you look at the fab four thats kind of how their lives panned out. They were an amazing cosmic light when they were around but ever since they were gone its been just one "big blah"... . Yeah there were a few jems with Lennon such as Imagine. And McCartney hit a few good notes with the Wings but really Sir Paul has been pretty hokey with what he has done since the Wings and not much can be taken seriously or compared to the magnitude of the Beatle's songs- simply a rediculous comparison cause they aren't even close in greatness. Thus proving that McCartney really needed Lennon all along! So if I were to ask myself who do I like better??? It is a hard thing to answer because Lennon was the catalyst that made McCartney great. And Lennon was the #1 genius of the Beatles revolution. But he has been gone too long to compare the two in the last 27 years. So I say its an even draw!!!

They complemented each other's writing. Paul wrote light-hearted lyrics, John wrote the darker side. The two had perfect SYNERGY...meaning when they collaborated they wrote a song that couldn't have been written by either one of them alone! It was a beautiful thing. An example would be the song "Getting Better" from the Sgt. Pepper album. Paul wrote "I've got to admit it's getting better..." and John continued that line with "...can't get no worse!" You see? Light and dark. Just like life. As far as Paul or John? I'd say Paul wrote for a larger "middle of the road" pop audience. John wrote for a more select group of philosophical type people. I love them both and I am their biggest fan. I was just listening to all their music at work today. It never grows old.

As a team, unbeatable but stuff Paul McCartney wrote for Wings couldn't begin to compete with John's songs such as: Woman, Beautiful Boy, Watching the Wheels, Just Like Starting Over....

No competition. John Lennon. One beautiful soul the world lost too early.

Has anyone else noticed that anyone who spreads a message of love, equality, and harmony they seem to have untimely deaths? For example, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Martin Luther King, Jesus etc.

Okay I don't get it. Someone goes through giving thumbs down to all the people who prefer John Lennon... why? Yeah it is called an opinion... grow up.
