It is earned over the course of time when it comes to letting someone into your deepest of secrets and thoughts, but when trying to make a new friend, or giving someone a chance you can bestow it upon them. No never know where it could lead.

Well, as I like to repeat from my favorite TV doc, House, "Everybody Lies", so....well, I try to give someone the benefit of the doubt, innocent until proven guilty, if you will... but it is a neverending process of earning and bestowing, I think :)

Unfortunately,you cant deem someone trust worthy without letting go and giving them a chance to prove it.People can put on masks and seem trustworthy or say that they are or seem like they are but without giving them a chance to prove it,you will never know.

With personal contact, it's automatically bestowed, unless my intuition, which I trust, tells me not to.
Then, if broken, it must be earned to be given again.
