If you are asking about switch in a matter of Networking, then it is a device that is used to build a network between 2 or more computers. Also you can connect the internet to that switch by a router and from this point forward all the connected computers on that switch can access the internet and can access each other depending on the access privileges given to each.

A switch when I was growing up was a tree branch that we personally got to pick out so my mom could whoop are little *sses. That's what a switch is and what it was used for.
