Space probes that have gone to Mars took about a year to get there. However a habitable space craft that would be able to get there would be much larger and therefore heavier than a probe and would therefore take quite a bit longer.

Having people on board a ship for that amount of time would have an amazing mental and physical effect. Being cooped up in a relatively small capsule with only a handful of people for company for over a year, being out of effective communication range with Earth for most of that time, and having to combat the effect of weightlessness with limited rationing of food and water would create an immense strain on a person.

I am sure it would be an honour for any person to first set foot on Mars, however I don't think they would feel so good once they got back.

As for when, I can't see it happening in my lifetime, or anyone else who is alive today. With the state the world is in at the moment I think there are other priorities for the International community and the USA in particular. I once heard that the budget for a Mars mission would be approximately $1 Trillion. With the state of the Space Shuttle, the overspending on the ISS, which still isn't complete, and I can't see the Russians getting involved, I think this budget is rather low and I think the United States have better things to spend over a $ Trillion on than space travel, which in the long run is not worth it.

Well, when man first walked on the moon in the late 1960s, scientists were talking about having Martian colonies before the end of the century. We came nowhere near fulfilling that prediction, so I wouldn't put much faith in seeing men on Mars anytime soon.

Well, we've already had 2 "Space Tourists" so I don't see colonization too far off.
