why should you expect to get "proper" fonts for free? a lot of work goes into designing and making a font... all that kerning, and tweaking of outlines and all the extra characters. ;-)
some people DO create fonts that they are happy to distribute as freeware though, so I'm sure you'll find them out there.

Beware of the larger-sized archives. As the page notes, these can be of variable quality.
