If a child is left to learn naturally it is usually between the ages of 7 and 9. If they are taught using reading schemes at school they may be able to read by 6 but both groups of children will have roughly the same reading ability by 10 - 11.

What do you mean by reading by themselves? My 4 year old will read odd words by herself but when she has a book she still just looks at the pictures.
However my friends 5 year old will read books by herself all the time. However she is a very advanced reader and has a reading age of about 7 so I assume that the age when they would just pick up a book and read is about 7.
It all depends on how enthusiastic they are about reading. My Dad didn't read anything as a child unless he was made to and is a very slow reader now as a result.

Varies completely from one child to another, based on a)the child's personality and general ability, b)their experiences of books and reading i.e. if you read with your child from when they are very young, they will develop a love of books and want to read.

I've known some 4 years olds who were becoming independent readers, equally there are some children in my Year 5 class now (9/10 years) who are still not independent readers.

Hope this helps!

It totally depends on the child. Most children learn what are called "site" words in their Kindergarten and 1st grade years. They learn these words by memorization and are able to read things such as "The cat sat on the mat and looked at the rat." I know that their vocabulary increases every week, and are generally able to start reading by themselves before 2nd grade. They may stumble on words, but mainly can do it. This is not always the case, I know that before I even started school that I was able to read smaller books by myself without being prompted ( I am pretty smart in English) but my younger brother was not able to read a 2ND grade book by himself until about 5Th grade (he is better at math). If you know of a child that has a hard time with reading, he or she could just be having a more difficult time with it, but it does not mean that he or she is learning disabled!
