possum Kingdom, Texas is known for the horrible murders that happened in its state park. The song is the bands interpretation of what happened in those murders. I know the song well as it was very popular when I was in college, and The Toadies came to play live many times while I was there. Possum Kingdom is an actual place, a large lake just west of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Toadies got their start in Dallas, so I am sure they visited that lake on many occasions. The song is about a man who wants to share a dark secret with his lover. The question is - what is the dark secret? And I don't know. It could be that he is a vampire and is asking her to join his vampire ranks and have eternal life, but why would he keep repeating "so help me Jesus?" I guess you can interpret the song however you like. Either way, it was a good song, they put on a good live show, and Possum Kingdom is a real lake.

I had always thought it was about kidnapping and murdering a young beautiful girl. The whole theme of being his 'perfect angel' was him taking and killing this girl so she could be 'beautiful forever.' At least that's what I thought when it came out, but I was in jr. high. Also, that whole album is dope, and despite what I thought the song meant they are considered a christian rock group.

On the surface it *sounds* like a song about vampirism. But I'm sure the band would deny it & that it's something totally different.
Guess only hardcore fans would know for sure...
