The current "official" rate is 1.48 or 1.49 Euros to the Pound. But beware, if you go to a Bureau de Change in the UK you may get 1.41 Euros for a Pound but when you come to buy back Pounds with Euros it might cost 1.65 or more. It pays to shop around. Taking cash from the hole in the wall or using credit cards may be a cheaper way of using money abroad.
The best way is to have a friend who has the currency you want and wants the currency you have - cut out the middle man.

North Africa Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt are less costly because their own living expenses and wages are lower. Turkey and some of the Eastern European areas too. Gibraltar is very small and the hotels expensive. You may end up a little bored too. Treat your holiday as a package. The additional cost of flying further than Spain or Portugal may outweigh the saving when you arrive at a country. It depends what you want from a holiday. If it is just a rest on a pretty beach with lots of sunshine then you will have plenty of choice. A place where the family has plenty to do all day and the kids looked after for you, then you wont want to travel far and holiday villages could still provide you with a good deal. If it is going to clubs at night and sleeping during the day then you could find North Africa a little limiting and alcohol expensive and less easy to find. I suggest that you investigate all inclusive holidays where everything is paid for before you go. Self catering, if you are not prepared to cook for your self can work up more expensive overall.
