I am 50 yrs old, and need help with my Pre-Algebra homework. We have a test tomorrow, even tho that is only the 4th day of class. I would like to be able to understand how "INTEGERS" work and how they fit into the algebraic features. Here is an example that I need help with:

-2 -!4! - 5(4) + 7 =

the first 4 is in integer brackets, and I don't know how to figure out if the negative stays a negative or if it is switched to a positive number before continuing on.

So, I need the help to figuring out this problem.

I also have short term memory loss which doesn't help me with this class either.

Someone out there can have the same issues, and if so, I NEED HELP !! Even if someone doesn't have any issues at all, I STILL NEED HELP, PLEASE.!!

I'm not sure what you mean by integer brackets. Is it supposed to be absolute value? If it is, the 4 stays a 4 because absolute value is always positive. Nothing happens to the negative sign in front.

The first thing to do on your problem is the multiplication. That will give you -2 - 4 - 20 + 7

Now take all the numbers with negative signs and add them up. You'll have -2 - 4 - 20 = -26

-26 + 7 = -19. The rule here is if two numbers have different signs, subtract the numbers and use the sign of the larger number.

Good luck on your test.

An integer is a whole number with a sign (+4, -6).

The brackets look to be the absolute value symbol, which means "the result of any operation is always positive"

ie, !3-6! = 3 . without the brackets, 3-6 = -3.

If there is a negative sign in front of the abs value bracket, then the result is always negative.

ie -!8+2! = -10.......and...... -!2-4! = -2

Hope that helps. Good luck.

If you have -(4) this is the same as -(+4). You can multiply the signs the same you multiply numbers, so you can see this as:

- times + = -

So -(4) = -4

-2 -(4) - 5(4) + 7
-2 - 4 - 20 + 7

If you need any additional information or question email me.

a) -!4! : what does this mean ? what do you mean with !4! ?

I suppose you mean the absolute value.

b) what do you mean with -5(4) ?

I really have no idea.

-2 -!4! = -2 - 4 = -6 ; asuuming !4! means the absolute value of 4

0 - -4 = +4 .

and 0 - !-5! = 0 - 5 = -5

What 14y+14136/14(because you're dividing, the signal switches) y>9.714 (this signifies that y is larger than or equivalent to 9.714) then you definately positioned 9.714 in the equation as adversarial to the y. 14(9.714)
