I'd like to have a new detached 2/3 car garage constructed in the same area as the water line running from our well to our house. I might be wrong, but it makes sense that this won't be a problem if the water line is buried deep enough. Is this correct? If so, how deep is deep enough?

Here is some additional information, based upon questions asked so far. I live in Maryland. The water line currently runs from the well to house, but I'm not sure how deep the is at the moment. I'm not currently constructing the garage - I'm wondering if it can be constructed on the ground over top of where the water line currently runs. This would be a small amount of excavation - enough for pouring the concrete pad of the garage. If there are major issues with doing this, I'll find a different place to do this prior to contacting a contractor.

It depends on how deep the frost gets in your area. Generally, 4' is safe unless you live in the North and then 6' would be safe.

Just a suggestion, install the water line inside another pipe,(sleeve) which is about twice the diameter, for the portion of the pipe that is under the garage. That way if there is a problem (such as a break) in the future all you have to do is dig on either side of the garage, remove the existing pipe and install a new one. Cheap insurance.

Water Line Depth

You don't specify how deep your water line is.
If you water line is well below the frost line, no problem unless you intend to go partially underground with the garage. If you don't have a frost line the water line may be running too shallow, and can be potentially damaged by construction of the garage, or stress due to the weight of the garage.

Have you checked your local codes? They may specify a depth, or even prohibit such construction, although I don't see why.

it depends...where do you live? The contractor SHOULD know and if you do not have a contractor make sure you have everything you need to build this thing or you may be tearing it down and paying fines...
BTW: the local hardware store guys will know how deep...
