Ra(Greek spelling) or Re(Egyptian Spelling) is the Egyptian god of the sun. He was also considered the creator God in upper Egypt. In one story Re was the first god born and did not want any others to be born so he did not allow Nut to give birth to any others. Re was also the one that had Hathor and Sekmet kill humans because they were not worshiping him. Only to regret it later. Re was also tricked by Isis into giving her his true name, thereby gaining power over him. There are many hymns to Re in the Book of the Dead. He was an extremely powerful and popular God. So popular that he was combined with other solar Gods such as Amen-Ra, Re-Horakthy, and so on. All Pharaohs were said to be descendants of the Sun God Ra. Many had his name in theirs. One example is Ramses which means "Son of Ra". The popularity of Re died down during the Ptolemy dynasty.

Ra or Re was the egyptian god of the sun. Every day he rides his chariot across the sky from east to west and at night he sails beneath the world in a great ship to get back to the east so that he can make his round the next day.
