Because they are trying to impress the other people, they don't have to impress you, cause you have already accepted them for what they are!

Those people are the ones who are not comfortable in their own skin yet. Meaning, they don't really know "who" they are as an individual, so they act like what they think everyone "expects" them to act like. I wouldn't worry about it too much because all of us go through that at least "once" in our lives, just some "more" than others, okay? When I come across people like that, I just "mentally" shake my head in pitty because they are lost for the moment. Okay?

This is "acting like yourself" Everybody does it. We act differently at work than at home, etc. It is human nature.

They're wishy-washy and they change to fit the sitauation so no one can see who they really are. I had friends like this in high-school. I think it boils down to an intense need to be accepted by everyone, so much that the person loses the gist of who he or she is at heart in trying to pretend to be something that they're not.

I know! It is so bizarre! I used to have a friend in school that was part of the "cool" group. She liked me a lot, we hung out after school and had lots of fun, but as soon as we were in school, she acted like she didn't know me, or if she had a party, I was never invited because her friends didn't like me.

In short: I DONT KNOW.

(But I do it myself too!)

Not all people do that and if you know any one like that they are fake and feel like they have to change their demeanor to impress people.
