It is illegal in the UK to write someone a bad reference!
The worst he can do is say NO COMMENT.
So stop worrying, if he tries to give you a bad reference, then the ball's in your court to take legal action.

It is NOT illegal to give a bad reference if it is true. If you know a person is a thief and can prove it, would you describe them as honest and reliable?People have taken a common practise of refusal to give a reference as a substitute for an honest negative reference.
In the case of your father-in-law. If he provides an untrue statement, you can take action against him to address the loss of any potential earnings. Also, if you have the recordings of the abusive messages report him to the authority who deal with that- contact BT for more information. Likewise take evidence of blackmail to the Police who will deal with it.
Back to the reference- Did you work with anyone else in the company? Did you provide service for a main customer? These are potential sources of references- remember to name the individual when passing details onto prospective employers. That way any letters will go direct to the person concerned.

It is not allowed to give a bad reference. He can refuse to give you a reference but if he gives you a bad one you could take him to court. So that is rubbish and he probably knows it. As for blackmail etc maybe you should consult the police expecially if you have evidence on your voicemail. He is obviously an idiot who is assuming you are going to put up with this. Back to the refernce is there anyone else in the company you could get a reference from who you got on well with? You donlt have to go through him you know.

By law he cannot give you a bad reference. Unless you put him as a personal reference all he can do is state when you worked for and how much. The new employer might have questions about why they won't answer more. But they are not allowed to infer anything negative by your previous employer lack of answers.
Besides, you are going to have a long career. It would take a hell of a lot to ruin it for your whole life.

In the future, I would not list him as a reference on my CV. I would also investigate libel and slander laws in my country to see if there is a way of legally preventing him from slurring my good name.

Simply produce an updated cv without references on which you would have done anyway.
Send the newer version of your cv to replace the previous version, and give the explanation that since he is family you felt it best to offer someone else as a reference. If your fatherinlaw doesn't own the compnay, ask his boss instead, and have a talk with the chap first.

L6 is right, you cant give a bad ref to anyone.
If he is getting abusive then play him at his own game and get him done for harassment! Atleast that way if the company tell you you've got a bad ref from him, you can explain you are having him charged with harassment and have a crime number to back it up.

it is a minimum of the third time the Clinton marketing campaign has suggested the assassination of Senator Obama. Judging by technique of countless the different issues they have pulled, my wager is they are planning to do him in then element to their comments to expose how somewhat intelligent they were to foretell it. It also serves the purpose of having the human beings used to the conception. it is an fairly old administration technique utilized by technique of politicians, and folk claiming she had no longer something to achieve by technique of the "slip" are hiding their heads in the sand. i don't think of there'll be any extra Clinton political careers. no longer for bill, Hill or Chelsea.

If your ex boss gives you a bad reference he will be breaking the Law. Refer him to your local job centre if he tries it.

If you have abusive and blackmailing voicemails from him report him to the police. The new employer would not want a reference from him then?
