how do these differences reflect different concepts of family?

Culture is dependant upon geography in my opinion. Geography determines how we can survive in a climate--do we need to cut big blocks of ice for the house and huddle together to keep warm or do we put the house on piles and make it huge and airy so we can keep cool. The climate where one lives has a huge impact on both culture and architecture--I don't think they can be separated.
While I don't think I ve anwered your question exactly, perhaps I've given you some food for thought.

1. available building materials
2. cultural traditions/aesthetics
3. climate
4. topography
5. purpose of dwelling: if the house will be used also as a farm, a shop, a workshop, with stables etc.
6. proximity to other houses/density of population
7. technological level of the culture (use of arches, elevators, glazing)
8. Family size/ cultural habits
