All the girls in my high school used to curl their bangs up and spray the crap out of them with the stiffest hairspray and they looked like the ran into a brick wall. The front was poofy and the backside of their bangs were flat! We looked ridiculous, but we thought we were cool.
As far as the fashions go, right now 80's are back. Denim mini skirts with leggings underneath, leg warmers, slouchy shirts with tanks underneath. Rows of jelly bracelets up your arms. Dangling earrings. Think big hair.
Have fun!

It was all about building an image that could be marketed. KISS started the makeup (though it was clearly not girly - more kabuki, perhaps), and had relatively big hair. The hair race was on, though you have to view it in light of the 60's and 70's, when hair was generally much longer than is fashionable today. The 80's just added a perm and a little more length, basically. The near-drag (or, in some cases, actual drag) was just something to shock parents and create a stage look that made them different. Oddly, since so many were doing it, it simply wasn't all that different. It's as odd to me (and I was there) as the fashions of the 70's (leisure suits, bell bottoms, etc.). Wish someone would explain to me how that got to be fashionable.

For the 80's, you have to have ridiculously HUGE hair, over-do it for effect, really big shirts and really small skirts with leggings (they are in this season as well), and tube socks with shoes, and huge earrings. A lot of stuff in the 80's was about HUGE!
Good luck, check out this website for some basics:
