The differences are just cosmetic. Sadly the Dems. try to appear to be for the ppl but, when push comes to shove, they both bow to Corp. America. Because of years of Stalin & Russian style communism, Socialism has really been made to suffer in the US.
Democracy is nothing more than a beautiful concept that everyone in the world should be entitled to. However, it has one major flaw: It is the only door to capitalism.

Capitalism, and the human greed it fosters, is the terminal cancer that eventually consumes and destroys true democracy. People eventually become enraged at being raped by the rich and privileged, and rise up and revolt, and dictatorial government is the result.

The prime example of this simple fact is the wanton destruction of personal freedoms; the rape, murder, pillaging and occupation of other nations for their natural resources. .

The real tragedy of all this is that despots like George W. Bush claim they are doing this to preserve democracy in the U.S. The fact is Americans lost their democracy the day he became president. There is a way to preserve personal freedoms and
democracy; it is called social democracy. Social democracy allows everyone to benefit, not just the wealthy. Social democracy is not communism.
As Ralph Nadar put it," The only difference between the Republicans and the Democrates is the velocity at which their knees hit the floor when the Coperations knock on the door."
Here in Canada, both of our main parties are similer to yours. The Conservatives & The Liberals(Don't let the name fool you). But we have a Socialist Party(NDP) which acts as the consience of Parliament.
Important,as useless as it may feel at times, always vote.
Sorry, I can't be more optimistic, but these are very trying times, please do not let the current system make you apathetic, as so many have. That is the greatest danger to our countries.

One is a Donkey and the other is an Elephant.

Seriously, it comes down to the policies that will drive the country (which programs get more money from congress). The policies to be implemented depend on the platform of the party "in charge".

For example:

If republicans are in charge - abortion takes a hit, more likely to go to war, social programs take a hit, business friendly, wants people to work and not live on welfare, etc.

If the democrats are in charge - pro choice, different approach of foreign affairs, more active in social programs, etc.

The problem with all this is that platforms change. Throughout history the democrats and republicans have changed positions many times. This is because they want to get elected. In order to get elected, they are going to offer what they think the majority of the people in the U.S. wants at a given time.

There are more things to this than what I have written here, but it should get you started.

The Republican party has better party organization and a more consistently enforced ideology.

The parties draw corporate constituent bases from different types of businesses: Republicans from agriculture and natural resources sectors, Democrats from entertainment and technology.

Both support big government - recent evidence suggests Republicans support even bigger government. Democrats have a better record over the past 40 years in reducing the deficit and balancing the budget (e.g. Clinton).

Republicans are quite a bit more hawkish - though primarily as a tool of the military-industrial complex, oil lobby, and Israeli interests.

Neither party is terribly accountable to the people - they play to their own polls.

I won't cuss. You asked a serious question & I will give a serious answer. Here are a few:

D: Believe all wealth belongs by right to the govt.
R: Believe all wealth belongs by right to those who earn it.

D: Think that it is protected speech to yell fire in a crowded theater.
R: Think it is protected speech to yell movie in a crowded firehouse.

D: Think all opinions are equally valid.
R: Know that there is a difference between right & wrong.

D: Think that we need to ask "UN may I?" before defending ourselves
R: Are ready to defend ourselves no matter what anyone else says.

D: Think that the Constitution is a suicide pact.
R: Know that President Lincoln was correct when he said it wasn't.

This should do for a start.

the major difference is the Republicans' base is conservative, while the Democrat's base is liberal.

That's why the Republican party has won the last several elections, because there are just more conservatives that liberals in this Country thank God

The Democrats care for people - being the Christian folks that they are.

The Republicans care only for themselves - being the unChristian folks that they are and make themself richer at the expense of the middle and lower classes.

And that is why the Republicans hate the Democrats.
